A new study from RAND Corporation highlights the influence that advertising has upon adolescents — even when it comes to medicinal use of drugs. Over 8,000 middle school students were surveyed regarding their exposure to medical marijuana ads as well as their likelihood to use marijuana. Youth who reported seeing advertising for medicinal use of marijuana were 2x as likely to use marijuana as their peers who had not been exposed to medical marijuana ads.
“The findings also emphasize the need for a policy discussion about whether regulations may be needed to limit advertising about marijuana for both medical and recreational use, such as the regulations in place that govern advertising of alcohol and tobacco.”
