Underage drinking continues to be an enduring problem across the country, contributing to 188,000 alcohol-related emergency visits in 2011. Of these visits, 20% resulted in what is considered to be a “serious outcome,” including transfer to another facility, admission to the hospital, or even death. Visits involving the use of both alcohol and drugs were more likely to result in a “serious outcome” than ones involving alcohol alone. One in four young people under the age of 21 reported using alcohol within the past month.
