Menthol Increases Nicotine Exposure, Worsens Addiction

Following numerous studies surrounding the effects of menthol upon nicotine addiction, another study out of Duke University and University of Connecticut has connected menthol makeup with worsening addiction and increasing nicotine exposure. Menthol cigarettes have already been linked to increased smoking among teens, and this finding comes at a pivotal time as the FDA considers the standings of regulating menthol products. Researchers found that menthol “reduces irritation of the airways and increases a critical marker of nicotine exposure…makings it easier to inhale smoke and increasing the dosage of nicotine. ” While numbers have shown a decrease in the amount of smokers, the number of menthol smokers has remained steady. There is hope that these new findings will be considered as the FDA moves forward in regulating menthol products this year.
