One of the most common symptoms of mental illness is isolation. A person with depression, for example, doesn’t want to face the world. Someone with schizophrenia might not want to hear voices while having a conversation with a neighbor. And someone with addiction might feel shame for their substance use. They might distance themselves from others in order to hide their drinking and drugs use.

  • –Join a support group, such as a 12-step meeting.
  • –Seek a sponsor.
  • –Start attending therapy.
  • –Seek support online.
  • –Find an addiction treatment center.


When a person is struggling with addiction, it’s easy to feel like you don’t fit in. A person might not feel accepted by friends or family. They might even feel that they don’t fit in with the rest of the world. Yet, ultimately when the desire to get sober outweighs feelings of shame or rejection, this can usually push one through the restraints of isolation. When that breakthrough happens, the connection to others can help a person recognize that he or she doesn’t have to survive the discomforts of drug detox and substance abuse treatment alone.

In fact, once an individual realizes that he or she is not alone in the addiction treatment process, there’s hope. Even the smallest ounce of hope can help a person gain the strength they need to help themselves. That small bit of light can keep them moving in the right direction. Even if they take two steps back and one step forward, knowing that there are others around can make all the difference in the world.
